On Sunday the 9th of September I was invited to deliver the welcome speech at the Isle of Ely Produce Open Day 2018.
This event takes place annually and gives fish and chip shops the chance to learn more about the potato supply chain from field to frier! It meant a 3am start on Sunday for me to get down there as I was working on Saturday.
With over 100 shops attending it’s a great event and much more pertinent this year as the early cold spell followed by the warm summer have combined to create a very unusual sotuation that none of us have ever experienced before. The best quality potatoes are going to be in short supply!
We also too the opportunity to present Calum Richardson of the Bay in Stonehaven near Aberdeen with the highest award we can give to someone who has not served on our board. You may have seen Calum in the media recently, to be honest best not often out of it! Last month his shop was named #31 out of 500 world food experiences in the Lonely Planet Guide. A fantastic achievement and really put fish and chips on the Global Foodie map!
I have been in fish and chips for 21 years and currently hold the position on President of the National Federation of Fish Friers
