I have been wanting to visit Peterhead since 2009 when I completed a charity walk on the Great Wall of China with some of the fishermen from the BBC Show Trawlermen. As President of the trade association, the NFFF, I felt it was time to get regional meetings going to get people together and Peterhead Fish Market seemed a great place to hold the first meeting when it was suggested by fellow frier Murray Watson from Stonehaven.

The Budding Rose in the Harbour

I flew up from Manchester the day before the meeting as it was to be an early start the following morning and was collected from Aberdeen Airport by my colleague Colin Cromar of the Fish Hoose in Thornton, Fife.

Fish and Chips from The Bay Stonehaven

We bobbed in to see Calum Richardson at The Bay, a former national winner located in Stonehaven. This shop is so busy and with food like it serves and the view it has… there is no mystery as why.

We then headed to Peterhead and decided to check out where the new market is to be prepared for the early start in the morning.

I checked in on Facebook and was instantly messaged by one of the great ambassadors of the Scottish fishing fleet, Peter Bruce. Peter has taken many camera crews out to show them the work that has to go in to bring fish to your local chip shop. Peter headed down to his Trawler, the Budding Rose, to meet us.

The Budding Rose

When Peter arrived he hauled over the Budding Rose to the Quay and we jumped aboard (something I need more practice at!).

Peter then treated us to a guided tour of the vessel

What a great experience and always a pleasure to chat to Peter.

The next morning we set off from the hotel early. The market opens at 7am so we made sure we were there for the start. We were meeting another legendary Trawlermen Jimmy Buchan.

Jimmy Buchan

Jimmy was also one of the fishermen featured on Trawlermen. Top guy and also supplies some of the finest langoustine in the country!

After the tour we headed upstairs where we got time to talk about how we can take these meeting forward.

The NFFF meeting

I have to thank everyone who attended and look forward to the next meeting. We then headed to Fraserburgh to visit a fish processors, Prime Seafood.

And to finish we headed to another great shop… the Ashvale… now a group of shops… the quality was fantastic.
